“HE WAS A WISE MAN WHO INVENTED BEER.” –  PLATO

Germany is the home of beers worldwide, with a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages and an incredible range of beer styles and specialties. From little villages to large cities, Germany also enjoys the largest number of breweries, at around 1,500 – half of them in the state of Bavaria.

Monasteries were the original centres for brewing, and they even introduced their own Beer Law! In 1516 the “Reinheitsgebot” (Beer Purity Law) stated that beer could only contain barley, water, and hops—later adding yeast—ensuring quality and consistency. Weihenstephan Brewery, near Munich, is the oldest continuously operating brewery in the world.

  • Dark beers include Dunkel, Schwarzbier (black beer), and then the heavier Bock and stronger varieties of this too
  • Wheat beers are either filtered, such as the Kristallweizen, or the classic unfiltered cloudy varieties Weizenbier (wheat beer) – often also referred to as Weißbier (white beer) – as well as the dark Dunkelweizen.
  • Regional specialty styles can be found across Germany. Some of the most popular include Altbier (Düsseldorf), Berliner Weisse (Berlin), Kellerbier (Franconia region), Kölsch (Cologne), Münchener Bier (Munich), Rauchbier (Bamberg) – just to name a few!
